Sister St. Charles Cullen, IHM

Sister St. Charles Cullen of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on May 8 at the Marian Convent.
Born in 1908 as Mary Hilda Cullen in Athens, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Julia Burke Cullen. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1929; made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1932 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1935.

She was a musician and teacher who served at St. Rose High School, Carbondale, 1932-42; St. John High School, Pittston, 1943-45; Holy Name of Mary Parish, Montrose, 1950-51; Epiphany Elementary School, Sayre, 1951-55; St. Joseph Elementary School, Williamsport, 1955-58 and 1959-61; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School, Archbald, 1961-67; St. Peter Parish, Wellsboro, 1967-68; as well as at schools in Pittsburgh, PA; and Forest Hills, Oyster Bay and Syracuse, NY.

She also served at the Marian Convent as a prayer minister from 1993 to the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of music degree from Marywood College and a master of science degree in music from the Juilliard School of Music.

Surviving are: a sister, Margaret Frain, Rochester, MN; a nephew, Michael Frain, Rochester, MN; and other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Judge James W. Cullen, and a sister, Justine O’Brien.

The funeral will be Monday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday after 2:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509.

 

 


Sister Margaret Russell, IHM

Sister Margaret Russell of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on May 3 at the Marian Convent.Born in 1917 as Mary Louise Russell in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Henry Nolan and Mary Cecilia Finn Russell. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937; made her temporary profession of vows on May 7, 1940 and her final profession of vows on August 4, 1943.

She was a musician and teacher who served at Cathedral Elementary School, Scranton, 1940-45; St. Peter Parish, Wellsboro, 1975-77; as well as at schools in Altoona, Bellefonte and Pittsburgh, PA; New York and Poughkeepsie, NY; Bridgeport, CT; and Baltimore, MD. She also served at the Marian Convent as the spiritual coordinator and pastoral minister from 1988-95, and as a prayer minister from 2000 to the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of music degree from Marywood College and a master of arts degree from New York University, both in music education. She also completed further study at the Juilliard School of Music. She was a member of the National Catholic Music Educators Association.

Surviving are: nieces: Sarah R. Russell, Elizabeth Domaracki and Nancy McKenna, Pittsburgh; Rosemary Niemczura, Pottstown, PA; and nephews: Paul J. Russell, Miami, FL; Francis X. Russell, Chicago, IL; John A. Russell, Chester Springs, PA; and James Russell, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John J. Russell, and a sister, Jane F. Russell.

The funeral will be Wednesday, May 7 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, Pa. 18509.

 

 


Sister Barbara Brow, IHM

Sister Barbara Brow (formerly Sister Grata) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on March 20 at the Marian Convent. Born in 1913 in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Louis and Marie McKenna Brow. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1934; made her temporary profession of vows on May 3, 1937 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1940.

She was an artist and teacher who served at the Marywood Seminary, Scranton, 1935-36; and Immaculate Conception Elementary School, 1942-45; as well as at schools in Cresson, Masontown and Pittsburgh, PA; Brooklyn, Oneida, Syracuse and Forest Hills, NY; Greshan, OR; St. Petersburg, FL; and Baltimore, MD. She also served at the Marian Convent in occupational therapy, 1986-2000 and as a prayer minister, from 2000 to the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of science degree in education and art from Marywood College.

Surviving are sisters: Ann Bors, Euclid, OH; Winifred Powers, Chesterland, OH; and Marie Wilson, East Lake, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers: Charles F. and Harold Brow; and sisters: Pauline F. Brow, Patricia Karschnick and Carolyn Kalstrom.

The funeral will be Wedesday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, Pa. 18509.

 

 


Sister Kathryn Gallagher, IHM

Sister Kathryn Gallagher (the former Sr. M. Gregoria) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on
March 11 at the Marian Convent. Born in 1916 in Jessup, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Patrick and Catherine L. Bradley Gallagher. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1933; made her temporary profession of vows on April 24, 1934 and her final profession of vows on April 30, 1936.

She served as a teacher at Holy Rosary High School, Scranton, 1941-53; St. Leo High School, Ashley, 1955-68; Bishop Hoban High School, Wilkes-Barre, 1984-92; and in schools in Forest Hills, Syracuse and Uniondale, NY. She was a prayer minister at Annunciation Convent, Kingston, 1992-2000, at the Marian Convent, 2000-01; and at the IHM Center, 2001-02.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in French from Marywood College and a master of arts in education from Villanova University.

Surviving are a sister, Joan Wright, Clarks Summit, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers: Robert and Richard.

The funeral will be Monday, March 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday after 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509.

 

 


Sister M. Norita Corrigan, IHM

Sister M. Norita Corrigan of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on March 9 at the Marian Convent. Born in 1919 in Scranton as Martha J. Corrigan, she was the daughter of the late Luke and Kathryn Fenton Corrigan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937; made her temporary profession of vows on May 7, 1940 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1943.

She served as a teacher at St. Mary Elementary School, Avoca, 1956-57; and as the director of religious education at St. Ignatius Parish, Kingston, 1983-97. She served as well as a principal and teacher at schools in Brooklyn, Oneida, Manhasset, Port Washington and Forest Hills, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; Cranston, RI; and Wilmington, DE.

She was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 1997 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Marywood College and a master of arts in administration and supervision from Duquesne University.

Surviving are sisters Nancy Smith, Kitty Baas and Eleanor Day, all of Scranton, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers: John and Luke; and sisters: Kathryn Corrigan and Mary Connolly.

The funeral will be Friday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday after 2:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509.
