Sister Kathleen M. Garvey, IHM

Sister Kathleen M. Garvey (formerly Sister M. Roderick) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on December 26, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

Born on March 25, 1928 in Coeur d'Alene, ID, she was the daughter of the late William and Laura Secaur Garvey. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 23, 1946 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 9, 1949 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1952.

She served as teacher at Nativity school in Scranton, PA from 1949 to 1951; she also served in schools in La Plata, MD; Portland, OR and Coeur d'Alene, ID, and ministered at the Marian Convent and IHM Center in Scranton until her death.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Marywood College in Scranton, PA.

Surviving are a brother Rev. Roderick, CSsR, Jal, NM; five sisters, Colleen Chase, Coeur d'Alene, ID; Frances Hagen, Rigby, ID; Rita Fitzpatrick, Spokane, WA, Bernita Garvey, Spokane, WA and Mary MacFarland, Coeur d'Alene, ID; nephews, nieces and grandnephews and grandnieces. She was preceded in death by a brother William and sister Joan Steel.

The funeral was Monday, January 3 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 

 



Sister Mary Ruth Bailey, IHM

Sister Mary Ruth Bailey (formerly Sister Mary Anthony) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on December 26, 2004, in Goldsboro, NC.

Born on April 21, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Foley Bailey. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1947 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1950 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1953

She served as teacher in schools in Cresson, Lock Haven and Pittsburgh, PA; Raleigh, New Bern, and Goldsboro, NC; East Rockaway, Smithtown and Syracuse, NY; and St. Petersburg, FL.

She received a bachelor of arts degree and a master of science degree both in elementary education from Marywood College in Scranton, PA.

Surviving are a brother Frank, Hingham, MA and a sister-in-law Mary D. Bailey, Munhall, PA. She was preceded in death by a brother Thomas and sisters Zelia and Helen M. Bailey.

The viewing and funeral was in St. Mary's Church in Goldsboro, NC. Interment will take place at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA on January 3.

 


Sister M. Lois Roche, IHM

Sister M. Lois Roche, IHM of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on December 28, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on September 10, 1915 in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Laura McCrea Roche. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1935 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1937 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1940.

Sr. Lois served as a teacher at St. Matthew Elementary School, East Stroudsburg from 1937 to 1942; St. Rose Elementary School, Carbondale from 1942-1948; St. Mary Mount Carmel Elementary School, Dunmore from 1950 to 1951; St. Paul High School, Scranton from 1951 to 1958; Bishop O'Reilly High School, Kingston from 1970 to 1975; Bishop Hannan High School, Scranton from 1975 to 1979 and 1982 to 1991; and Bishop Klonowski High School, Scranton from 1979 to 1982. Sr. Lois was principal at St. Ann High School/ Elementary School, Scranton from 1962 to 1964; Seton Catholic High School/ Elementary School, Pittston from 1964 to 1966; Bishop Hannan High School, Scranton from 1966 to 1968; and St. Leo High School, Ashley from 1968 to 1970. She also served in schools in Baltimore, MD and Washington, NC. Sr. Lois served as an EEI instructor at the IHM Center from 1991 to 2001 and as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 2001 until her death.

She received a bachelor of arts degree and a master of arts degree, both in education, from Marywood College in Scranton, PA.

Surviving are nieces Lois Gallagher, Arlene Quinn, Sharon Elliot, Eleanor Gaffney, Alice Hubert all of Scranton; Judy Smar, Edison, NJ; Ann Bittner, Deer Park, NY; Mimi Bradford, Phoenix, AZ and a nephew Tom Roche, Pocono Lake, PA. She was preceded in death by six brothers: Hubert; Joseph; John; Robert; Francis and Thomas; and five sisters: Sister Clare, IHM; Margaret Coggins; Catherine Brennan; Mary Conaboy and Loretta Hayes.

The funeral was Monday, January 3 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by internment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA.

 


Sister M. Rosalie Martin, IHM

Sister M. Rosalie Martin, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on December 24, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on April 16,1915, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Agnes V. Trainor Martin. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 7, 1940 and her final profession of vows on August 1,1943.

She served as an elementary school teacher at St. Mary Elementary School in Dunmore from 1967 to 1971 and at Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton from 1972 to 1975. She also served in schools in Manhasset, Poughkeepsie, and Syracuse, NY; Cranston, RI; Silver Spring, Md; and Washington, NC. She served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 1975 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of science degree from Marywood College in Education.

Surviving are two sisters, Agnes Martin and Josephine Martin Brady both of Danville, Pa; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and Edward; and three sisters, Sister Josephine Marie Martin, IHM, Margaret Martin and Elizabeth Coleman.

The funeral was Tuesday, December 28, at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.


Sister M. Marsia Gownley, IHM

Sister M. Marsia Gownley, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on December 13, 2004, at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale.

Born on October 26, 1917, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Catherine Tighe Gownley. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 7, 1940 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1943.

She served as an elementary school teacher at St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley from 1940 to 1946; at St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport from 1965 to 1966; and at St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, Pa. from 1966 to 1967. She also served in schools in Baltimore, Md; Binghamton, Brooklyn, Nyack, and East Rockaway, NY; and Bridgeport, Ct. She was stationed at the Marian Convent from 1967 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of science degree from Marywood College in Education.

Surviving is a brother, Atty. Robert of Scranton; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Rev. Leonard, C.P., William, and James; and two sisters, Grace Gownley Gilroy and Mary Fear Wildeman.

The funeral was Thursday, December 16, at 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister Loretta Chouinard, IHM

Sister Loretta Chouinard, formerly known as Sister M. Euthalia, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on October 20, 2004, at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale.

Born on November 4, 1906, in Worcester, MA, she was the daughter of the late John and Helena Martele Chouinard. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 4, 1928 and made her temporary profession of vows on April 14, 1931 and her final profession of vows on August 4, 1934.

She served as an elementary school teacher in the Scranton Diocese at Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn from 1931 to 1937; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston from 1937 to 1939; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley from 1939 to 1948; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport from 1957 to 1960; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore from 1967 to 1968; and at St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton from 1976 to 1977. She taught nursery school and kindergarten at St. Joseph Center in Scranton from 1948 to 1949. She was the postmistress at Marywood College from 1978 to 1987. She also served in schools in Altoona, Bellefonte, and Pittsburgh, Pa.; Asbury Park, N.J.; La Plata and Baltimore, Md.; Bridgeport, Ct. From 1987 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a bachelor of science degree from Marywood College in Education.

Surviving is a great nephew, Kenneth Gengo of Pawtucket, R.I. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Romeo, Leo and John, and three sisters, Alice Mack, Antoinette Martin, and Corrinne Brown.

The funeral was Saturday, October 23, at 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister Ann Ryan, IHM

Sister Ann Ryan, formerly known as Sister M. Sebastian, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died at the Marian Convent in Scranton on October 14, 2004.

She was born in Dunmore, Pa., daughter of Patrick J. and Nellie E. McHale Ryan. Educated in the Dunmore public elementary and high schools she later received a bachelor of arts degree from Bloomsburg University and a master of arts degree from Marywood University.
Sister Ann entered the IHM Congregation in 1940. She served as a teacher in various Catholic Schools including; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School, Syracuse, N.Y.; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary and High Schools, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Saint Alphonsus High School, New York, N.Y.; Saint Patrick Elementary School, Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School, Cathedral Elementary School and St. Paul Elementary School all in Scranton, Pa.

Surviving are a brother, Rev. John Ryan, Marquette, Michigan; three sisters, Sister Mary Ryan, IHM, residing at Cathedral Convent in Scranton, Sister Venard Ryan, residing at the IHM Center in Scranton, and Florence Ryan, of Clarks Summit, Pa. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Rev. Joseph and William.

The mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, October 18 at 4:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.

 


Sister M. Pius LaRocque, IHM

Sister M. Pius LaRocque of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on September 24, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on September 9, 1906, in Tupper Lake, NY, she was the daughter of the late Ovilla and Rose Martin LaRocque. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 15, 1931 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 1, 1934 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1937.

She served as an elementary school teacher in the Scranton Diocese at Marywood Seminary from 1933 to 1934; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School from 1934 to 1945 and 1968 to 1971; Cathedral Chapel Elementary School from 1945 to 1952; St. Bernard Elementary School from 1956 to 1960; St. Peter’s Parish in Wellsboro from 1963 to 1965; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald from 1972 to 1975; and at Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clarks Green from 1982 to 1986. She also served in schools in Poughkeepsie and Syracuse, NY; Washington, NC; Baltimore, MD; and Providence, RI. From 1986 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a bachelor of arts degree from Marywood College in English and French.

Surviving are two sisters, Regina McGill and Mary Hayden, both of Tupper Lake, NY; a brother, Martin, Tupper Lake, NY, nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Paul and Dr. Charles, and two sisters, Beatrice Baker and Lucille.

The funeral was Wednesday, September 29, at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister Mary Roche, IHM

Sister Mary Roche, formerly known as Sister Agatha, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on August 26, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on June 21, 1927, in Pittston, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine Dougher Roche. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1947 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1949 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1952.

She served as an elementary and music teacher at St. Hugh in Hughesville from 1949 to 1954 and at Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty Fort from 1954 to 1955. She was a junior high school teacher at St. Clare Elementary School in Scranton from 1959 to 1960. Sr. Mary was the principal at St. Joseph High School in Williamsport from 1967 to 1969; and served as vice-principal and later as principal at Bishop O’Reilly High School in Kingston from 1969 to 1978; Pocono Central Catholic High School in Cresco from 1978 to 1979; and at Bishop Hannan High School in Scranton from 1979 to 1986. She also served as a teacher in schools in Forest Hills, NY; and LaPlata and Dundalk, MD. She was the Archivist for Marywood University from 1986 to 2000. From 2000 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a bachelor of arts degree from Marywood College and a masters of education degree from Duquesne University.

Surviving are two brothers, Thomas, of Endwell, NY, and John of Fenton, MI, and nieces and nephews.

The funeral was Tuesday, August 31, at 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 

 


Sister M. Hildegarde Monahan, IHM

Sister M. Hildegarde Monahan, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on August 2, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on July 19, 1919, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Susan Collins Monahan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1939 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1942 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1945.

She served as a teacher of primary grades and music at Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn from 1942 to 1944 and from 1946 to 1947; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore from 1954 to 1957; St. Patrick Elementary School in Whitehaven from 1962 to 1963; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald from 1963 to 1969 and taught private music lessons there from 1978 to 1983; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clarks Green from 1969 to 1972; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton from 1972 to 1978. She taught private music lessons at St. Patrick Convent in Scranton from 1983 to 1991. She also taught in schools in Patton, and Masontown, PA; La Plata, MD; Oneida, NY; Providence, RI; and Washington, NC. She served as a receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton from 1991 to 1993. From 1993 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a bachelor of music degree from Marywood College.

Surviving are cousins, including Eleanor Deviney of Clarks Summit.

The funeral was Friday, August 6, at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 



Sister Kathleen Kelley, IHM

Sister Kathleen Kelley, formerly known as Sister M. Elizabetta, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on August 2, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on January 7, 1916, in Syracuse, NY, she was the daughter of the late William C. and Elizabeth O’Brien Kelley. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1934 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 3, 1937 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1940.

She served as a teacher at St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca from 1937 to 1948 and at St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald from 1957 to 1960. She also served in schools in Rockaway, NY; Wilmington, DE; Bethesda, MD; Providence, RI; and Twin Falls, ID. She served as the coordinator of volunteers at St. Joseph Hospital in Carbondale from 1980 to 1984. She served on the staff at the Marian Convent from 1974 to 1980 and later as the director of transportation services from 1984 to 2000. She was a receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton from 2000 to 2002. From 2002 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Marywood College.

Surviving are a sister, Mary Beeler, Manlius, NY; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank W. and Robert V.; and two sisters, Margaret Lundquest and Dorothy Madden.

The funeral was Thursday, August 5, at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 

 


Sister Mary Andrew Earley, IHM

Sister Mary Andrew Earley, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on July 19, 2004, at the Mercy Hospital, Scranton, PA.

Born on November 5, 1922, in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Michael J. and Mary Agnes Westman Earley. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1943, and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1946, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1949.

She served as a high school business teacher at Bishop Hannan High School in Scranton from 1981 to 1982; Sacred Heart High School in Carbondale from 1978 to 1981; Pocono Central Catholic High School in Cresco from 1964 to 1968 and from 1982 to 1988; as well as in schools in Pittsburgh, PA, and Brooklyn, New York City and Oyster Bay, NY. She served as secretary in the development office of the Archdiocese of New York and also as secretary at Cathedral High School in New York City. She was a receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton from 1996 to 2000 and a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 2000 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in business from Marywood College and a master of arts degree from New York University in education.

Surviving is a brother, Thomas M., Whitehall, PA; many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, John, and sister, Alice Lamontagne.

The funeral was Monday, July 26 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA.

 



Sister M. Carmelina Fabbri, IHM

Sister M. Carmelina Fabbri, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on July 6, 2004, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.

Born on November 15, 1917, in Masontown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Teopisto and Dusola Bandini Fabbri. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1936, and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1938, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1941.

She served as a teacher at Costello Nursery School in Williamsport from 1945 to 1947; and St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald from 1967 to 1969. She also served in schools in Altoona, Bellefonte, Cresson, and Pittsburgh, PA; Asbury Park, NJ; Brooklyn and Syracuse, NY; and Baltimore, MD. She also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Ignatius Parish in Kingston from 1952 to 1954 as well as at parishes in Hastings, PA, Devon, CT, and Binghamton and Inwood, NY. She was a receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton from 1985 to 1986 and a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 1986 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Marywood College.

Surviving is a sister, Mary Ann Mojock, Masontown, PA; many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis J. and Monsignor Joseph Fabbri.

The funeral was Friday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA.

 



Sister Clare Roche, IHM

Sister Clare Roche, formerly known as Sister Isidora, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on May 25, 2004, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.

Born on July 3, 1912, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Patrick. and Laura McCrea Roche. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1933, and made her temporary profession of vows on April 30, 1936, and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1939.

She served as a teacher at St. John Elementary School in Pittston from 1942 to 1945; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton from 1947 to 1948; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca from 1948 to 1949; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale from 1975 to 1977; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton from 1977 to 1978; Bishop O’Hara High School in Dunmore from 1978 to 1983; and as a tutor at the Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton from 1989 to 1991. She was principal at St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, and at Archbishop Neale Elementary School in LaPlata, MD. She also served in schools in East Stroudsburg and Hollidaysburg, PA; Binghamton, Manhasset, and Oneida, NY; Devon, CT; and Baltimore, MD. She served as a receptionist at Marywood College from 1983 to 1989 and at the IHM Center from 1991 to 1993. She also served as a prayer minister at the IHM Center from 1993 to 1999 and then at the Marian Convent from 1999 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in education and a master of arts degree in religious education both from Marywood College.

Surviving is a sister, Sister Lois Roche, IHM, Marian Convent, Scranton; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Hubert, Joseph, John, Robert, Francis, and Thomas; and four sisters, Margaret Coggins, Catherine Brennan, Mary Conaboy, and Loretta Hayes.

The funeral was Friday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA.

 



Sister M. Edith Halligan, IHM

Sister M. Edith Halligan of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on May 19, 2004, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.

Born on July 4, 1919, in West New York, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Michael A. and Mary E. Carlson Halligan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937, and made her temporary profession of vows on May 7, 1940, and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1943.

She served as a faculty member in the music department at Marywood College from 1940 to 1942 and from 1951 to 1959. She served as a music teacher at St. John’s High School in Susquehanna from 1948 to 1950; at St. John’s High School in Pittston from 1950 to 1951; at the IHM Novitiate from 1962 to 1966. She provided private music lessons at the IHM Center from 1990 to 2000 and at the Marian Convent from 2000 to 2002. She also served in schools in Pittsburgh, PA; Asbury Park and Delran, NJ; and Manhasset and Uniondale, NY. She served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 2002 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of music degree from Marywood College and a master of arts degree in music from New York University.

Surviving is a brother, Dr. William A. Halligan, Pinehurst, NC; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael John; and a sister, Sr. Rita Halligan, IHM.

The funeral was Wednesday, May 26 at 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA.

 



Sister M. Thomas Aquinas Kielceski, IHM

Sister M. Thomas Aquinas Kielceski of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on April 15, 2004, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.

Born on February 22, 1931, in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Eva Knopka Kielceski. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1950, and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1953, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1956.

She served as a teacher at Cathedral High School in Scranton, PA, from 1965 to 1969, at Nativity School in Scranton, PA, from 1969 to 1979, at Msgr. McHugh School in Cresco, PA, from 1990 to 2003 and as principal at St. Paul School in Scranton PA, from 1984 to 1988. She also served as a teacher at schools in Greensboro, NC, Pittsburgh, PA, and Verona, NJ, and as assistant principal in Oyster Bay, NY. She served as an instructor at the IHM Educational Institute, Scranton, PA, and as an ancillary staff member at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA, from 2003 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of science degree in home economics and a master of science degree in English from Marywood College, Scranton, PA.

Surviving are a sister, Genevieve Kurosky, Montrose, PA; and several nieces and nephews including Sister Eva Marie Zlotucha, IHM, Scranton, PA. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Stanley; and two sisters, Helen Zlotucha and Leocadia Clarke.

The funeral was Monday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center Chapel followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA.

 



Sister Mary Rose Freiman, IHM

Sister Mary Rose Freiman, formerly Sister Mary Assumpta, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on March 28, 2004, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.

Born on September 8, 1927 in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes Kelly Freiman. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1945 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1948 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1951.

She served as a teacher at Epiphany School in Sayre, PA, from 1948 to 1951 and Marywood Seminary, Scranton, PA, from 1957 to 1959 and as an occupational therapist at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA, from 1972 to 1983. She also served as a teacher at schools in Bellefonte, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, Raleigh, NC, and Manhasset, NY, as well as a school librarian in Manhasset, NY. She served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 2000 until the time of her death.

She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art from Marywood College and a Master of Arts Degree in Religious Studies from Manhattan College.

Surviving are three sisters, Agnes and Clare Freiman, Rochester Hills, MI and Sister Patricia Freiman, RSM, Pittsburgh, PA; and a brother Martin, Sterling Heights, MI.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Rev. Thomas, O. Carm. and a sister, Jean Baker.

The funeral was Thursday, April 1 at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 



Sister Rita Halligan, IHM

Sister Rita Halligan, formerly known as Sister M. Josetta, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on March 11, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on June 19, 1924 in Teaneck, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Ellen Carlson Halligan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1943 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1946 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1949.

She served as a teacher at St. Patrick Elementary School, Scranton, from 1946 to 1948; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School, Scranton, from 1963 to 1965; and St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg from 1953 to 1954. She also served in schools in Wilmington, DE; Baltimore, MD; Goldsboro and Washington, NC; and Mount Holly, NJ. She was principal at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ, from 1969 to 1975. She was the assistant superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Trenton, NJ, from 1975 to 1982 and an educational consultant for the IHM Congregation from 1982 to 1986. She was a pastoral minister at St. Augustine Parish in Larchmont, NY, from 1986 to 2001. Sister Rita served as a receptionist and prayer minister at the IHM Center from 2001 to 2003. From 2003 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a bachelor of music degree from Marywood College and a master of science degree in elementary principalship from Monmouth College.

Surviving are a sister, Sister Edith Halligan, IHM, Scranton; and a brother, William A. Halligan, MD, Pinehurst, NC; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael John.

The funeral was Tuesday, March 16 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.




Sister M. Marella Moran, IHM

Sister M. Marella Moran of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on February 11, 2004, at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

Born on December 3, 1921 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Scheiber Moran. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 3, 1942 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1945.

She served as a teacher at St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale from 1951 to 1957; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley from 1957 to 1965; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton from 1965 to 1969; and later she served as principal at St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clarks Green; and at St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale. She also served in schools in Binghamton, and Oyster Bay, NY; and Upper Marlboro, MD. She was the director of religious education at St. Catherine and St. Ignatius parishes in La Plata, MD, from 1986 to 1993. From 1993 until the time of her death she served as an assistant in the business office at the IHM Center in Scranton.

She received a bachelor of arts degree from Marywood College and a master of arts degree from the University of Detroit both in education.

Surviving are a brother, Frank, Scranton; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Francis, Harold, Ambrose, and Robert; and two sisters, Mary Moran and Claire Vesey.

The funeral was Saturday, February 14 at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.
