Sister Edna Marie Wentland, IHM

Sister Edna Marie Wentland, IHM, formerly Sister M. Sophie, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on November 22, 2005, at the Marian Convent.

Born on May 2, 1916 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Josephine Stasiak Wentland. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1935 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 3, 1938 and her final profession of vows on August 3, 1941.She served as a teacher at St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings from 1956 to 1958; St. Mary Elementary School in Upper Pittston from 1969 to 1970; and at St. Peter Parish in Wellsboro in 1971. She also served in schools in Brooklyn, NY; Upper Marlboro, Md; New Bern and Rocky Mount, NC; and Coeur d’Alene, ID. She was a nurse’s aide at the Marian Convent from 1971 to 1980 and also served on the staff there from 1984 to 1994. She ministered to the elderly in Silver Spring, Md, from 1980 to 1984. From 1994 to 1996 she served as a receptionist and a prayer minister at the IHM Center in Scranton. From 1996 to until the time of her death she was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Marywood College.

Surviving are two brother, Gerald of Sacramento, CA, and Paul of Blakely, PA; and two sisters, Agnes Rogoff of Brooklyn, NY, and Theresa Kohut of Ocala, FL.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Alfred and a sister, Natalie Williams. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 29 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday, November 28, between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to support the retired IHM Sisters c/o the IHM Building Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA. 18509.

 


Sister M. Gerlinda Griffin, IHM

Sister M. Gerlinda Griffin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on November 12, 2005, at the Marian Convent.

Born on September 27, 1922 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Smith Griffin. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1939 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1942 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1945.

She served as a teacher at St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca from 1942 to 1943; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh from 1945 to 1949; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley from 1949 to 1951; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald from 1951 to 1952; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown from 1954 to 1955; Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty Fort from 1955 to 1957; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh from 1957 to 1962; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg from 1981 to 1984; and at St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale from 1984 to 1994. She also served in schools in New York, Syracuse, NY; and Asbury Park, NJ. She served as an instructor at the Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton from 1994 to 2001 and as a receptionist at the IHM Center. From 2001 to until the time of her death she served as a companion and prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science degree in Education both from Marywood College.

Surviving are a sister, Eleanor Dipple of Gouldsboro, a brother, Charles from Clarks Summit and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald and Joseph and a sister, Margaret Lavin. The funeral was Thursday, November 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister Rosemary Casey, IHM

Sister Rosemary (formerly Sister Norma) Casey of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on October 30 at the IHM Center, Scranton, PA.

Born on January 29, 1924 in Carbondale, PA she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Malia Casey. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1941 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1944 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1947.

She served as a teacher at All Saints School, Masontown, PA from 1944 to 1949, at St. Mary’s School, Patton, PA from 1949 to 1955, at Holy Rosary School, Scranton, PA from 1955 to 1957 and at St. Leo School, Ashley, PA from 1957 to 1964. She served as principal of Christ the King School, Dunmore, PA from 1964 to 1968, of St. John School, Silver Spring, MD from 1968 to 1969, of St. Thomas Aquinas School, Archbald, PA from 1969 to 1972, of St. Mary of Mount Carmel School, Dunmore, PA from 1972 to 1983, of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Asbury Park, NJ, from 1983 to 1986. She served as postmistress at Marywood University from 1986 to June, 2005. From June, 2005 to the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the IHM Center, Scranton, PA.

She received both a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Marywood College.

Surviving are four sisters, Julie McGuiness, Roseland, NJ, Catherine Price, Carbondale, PA, Anne Roe, Clarks Green, PA, Jean Smith, Tafton, PA, and a brother, Lt. Gen. Aloysius Casey, Redlands, CA and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lt. Joseph J. Casey, Jr. and Dr. Paul R. Casey.

The funeral was Friday, November 4 at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.




Sister M. Adele Mullen, IHM

Sister M. Adele Mullen of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Saturday, October 29, 2005, at the Marian Convent.

Born on July 30, 1929, in Kingston, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Kathryn Murphy Mullen. She entered the I.H.M. Congregation on Sept. 8, 1948, and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1951, and her final profession of vows on Aug. 2, 1954.

She served as a teacher for St. Basil School, Dushore, from 1951 to 1954; at Holy Name of Mary School, Montrose, from 1954 to 1959; at St. Cecilia School, Wyoming, from 1959 to 1960; at Epiphany School, Sayre, from 1960 to 1961; at All Saints School, Masontown, from 1961 to 1964; at St. Thomas School, Bedford, from 1969 to 1976; at St. Paul School, Scranton, from 1976 to 1981; at St. Clare School, Scranton, from 1981 to 1982, and at St. Matthew School, East Stroudsburg, from 1982 to 1988. She also served as a teacher at schools in Asbury Park, N.J., and New Bern, N.C., and as coordinator of music at Our Lady of Mercy School and Parish, Forest Hills, N.Y., and the Marian Convent. She served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 1997 until the time of her death.

She received both a bachelor of music degree and a master of arts in music degree from Marywood College.Surviving are a sister, Sister Robertus Mullen, I.H.M., Scranton, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Mullen, and two sisters, Margaret Mullen and Agnes Mangan.

The funeral was Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent. Interment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.




Sister M. Maris Law, IHM

Sister M. Maris Law, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on September 28, 2005, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on June 11, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Elizabeth Dolan Law. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1935 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 4, 1938 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1941.

She served as a teacher at St. Mary Elementary School in Cresson from 1961 to 1963; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler from 1963 to 1965; and as coordinator of religious education at St. Agnes Parish in Forest City from 1965 to 1971; St. Ignatius Parish in Kingston from 1971 to 1977; St. Peter Parish in Wellsboro from 1977 to 1981; St. Patrick Parish Parish in Milford from 1981 to 1982; St. Eulalia Parish in Elmhurst from 1982 to 1984; and St. Mary Parish in Dunmore from 1984 to 1986. She also taught in schools in Binghamton, Port Washington and East Rockaway, NY; and Baltimore and Silver Spring, MD. From 1986 until 2001 she served on the staff of the Marian Convent in Scranton. From 2001 to the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and a Master of Arts degree in religious studies both from Marywood College.Surviving is a nephew, Joseph Law of Ft. Myers, FL; grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers; Joseph and William.

The funeral was Tuesday, October 4 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 



Sister Mary Cornelius Scanlon, IHM


Sister Mary Cornelius Scanlon of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on August 15, 2005 at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.Born on March 24, 1920 in Edgewood, RI. she was the daughter of the late Michael and Nora Finnerty Scanlon.

She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1939 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1942 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1945.

She served as a teacher at St. Cecilia School, Wyoming, PA from 1951-1952 and St. Matthew School, East Stroudsburg, PA from 1971 to 1975; as well as schools in Bridgeport, CT. Baltimore, MD, Mount Holly, NJ, and Brooklyn, East Rockaway, Forest Hills, Manhasset, Nyack, New York City, and Port Washington, NY. She served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 2001 until the time of her death.

She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Marywood College. Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Cornelius, Edmund, John and Thomas and six sisters, Sister Mary Nicholas, IHM, Mildred Lally, Bernadette Long, Mary Scanlon, Loretta Scanlon and Helen Stannard.

The funeral will be Friday, August 19, at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on August 18, between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

 



Sister M. Emeria Brundage, IHM

Sister M. Emeria Brundage, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on July 23, 2005, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on September 5, 1927 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine E. Hughes Brundage. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1947 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1949 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1952.

She served as a teacher at St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg from 1949 to 1952 and 1957 to 1963. She also taught in schools in Brooklyn, NY, and Bridgeport, Ct. She was a special education teacher at schools in Brooklyn, NY and Baltimore, Md. She served at Marywood College as the chairperson of the Special Education Department from 1971 to 1984. She also served at Marywood as Coordinator of Academic Advising and Testing from 1985 to 2000. She served at Marywood as Coordinator of Standardized Testing from 2000 to 2001. Sister Emeria resided at the IHM Center as a prayer minister from 2001 to 2003. From 2003 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College and a Master of Arts degree in special education from Cardinal Stritch College in Jefferson, WI.

Surviving is a brother, Wilmer, of Folcroft, Pa; and nephews and nieces.

The funeral was Tuesday, August 2 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister M. Laetitia Caulson, IHM

Sister M. Laetitia Caulson, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on June 15, 2005, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on May 28, 1904 in Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Ann Burke Caulson. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 8, 1929 and made her temporary profession of vows on July 31, 1931 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1934.

She served as a housekeeper and cook at ministry sites and convents including St. Joseph Shelter in Scranton from 1935 to 1937; St. Joseph Convent in Danville from 1937 to 1939; St. Cecilia Convent in Exeter from 1939 to 1941; IHM Generalate in Scranton from 1941 to 1943 and 1957 to 1960; IHM Novitiate in Scranton from 1960 to 1973; Sacred Heart of Mary Convent in Jermyn from 1973 to 1976; and Holy Rosary Convent in Scranton from 1976 to 1986. She also served at convents in New York, NY; and Mount Holly, NJ. From 1986 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton. Sister Laetitia graduated from Dunmore High School.

Surviving are nieces, including Sister Beatrice Caulson, IHM of Gainsville, FL and Sister Margaret Mary Caulson of Bay Shore, NY; nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers; John, Thomas, Frank and Brother Ronan, CP; and three sisters; Mary McHale, Catherine Caulson and Sister M. Annchen Caulson, IHM.

The funeral was Friday, June 24 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister Genevieve McCloskey, IHM

Sister Genevieve McCloskey, formerly known as Sister M. Hosina, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on June 13, 2005, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.Born on September 4, 1916 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Sarah Welsh McCloskey. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1935 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 2, 1938 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1941.

She served as a teacher at St. Agnes Elementary School in Lock Haven from 1938 to 1950; St. Mary of the Mount High School in Pittsburgh from 1950 to 1956 and 1970 to 1982; Kingston Catholic High School in Kingston from 1956 to 1957 and 1960 to 1962; St. Rose High School in Carbondale from 1962 to 1963; and South Catholic High School in Scranton from 1966 to 1967. She also served in high schools in Brooklyn, Manhasset, Oyster Bay and Uniondale, NY; and La Plata, Md. From 1999 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in English from Marywood College and a Master of Arts degree in Education from Duquesne University.

Surviving are nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers; Edwin, William, Lawrence and Francis; and two sisters; Mary G. Flatley and Sister M. Bonaventure, IHM.

The funeral was Friday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister M. Christina Murphy, IHM

Sister M. Christina Murphy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on May 17, 2005, at the Marian Convent.Born on June 29, 1013 in Pittston, she was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Tigue Murphy.

She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1936 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1938 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1941.

She served as a teacher at St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg from 1938 to 1943; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton from 1956 to 1959; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg from 1968 to 1972; St. Mary of Mount Carmel in Dunmore from 1973 to 1975; and at St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley from 1975 to 1980. She also served in schools in Mount Holly, NJ; Forest Hills and Poughkeepsie, NY; Goldsboro and Rocky Mount, NC; Coeur d’ Alene, ID; and Gresham, OR. From 1986 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Marywood College.

Surviving are nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers; Joseph, John, Bernard, Francis, and William.

The funeral was Friday, May 20 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister M. Fidelmia Lynch, IHM

Sister M. Fidelmia Lynch, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on April 9, 2005, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.Born on June 29, 1910 in Cork, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Bridget Nagle Lynch.

She entered the IHM Congregation on July 30, 1929 and made her temporary profession of vows on April 21, 1932 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1935.

She served as a teacher at St. John Elementary School in Pittston in 1932; St. John Elementary School in Bellefonte from 1932 to 1933; St. Michael Elementary School in Hoban Heights from 1933 to 1942; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton from 1942 to 1947; and at St. John Elementary School in Cresson from 1956 to 1960. She also served in schools in Baltimore, Bethesda, La Plata, and Upper Marlboro, Md. From 1978 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Marywood College.

Surviving are nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Cornelius, and Michael; and five sisters, Bridget Lynch, Mary Cronin, Elizabeth O’Shea, Rose Hyde, Agnes Mahoney, and Margaret Lane.

The funeral will be Thursday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister Mary Elsie Miller, IHM

Sister Mary Elsie Miller, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on March 28, 2005, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.Born on October 26, 1917 in Bellefonte, PA, she was the daughter of the late Martin Joseph and Iona Callis Miller. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 7, 1940 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1943.

She served as a teacher at St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg from 1940 to 1944; St. John Elementary School in Scranton from 1944 to 1945 and as principal there from 1961 to 1967; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale from 1951 to 1953; and at St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg from 1967 to 1968. She was principal at Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty Fort from 1959 to 1961 and also at St. Joseph High School in New Bern, NC, from 1958 to 1959. She also served in schools in Asbury Park, NJ; Forest Hills, NY; and Baltimore, Md. Later she served as librarian in schools in Williamsport and Pittsburgh; Silver Spring, Md; and at Marywood College in Scranton from 1976 to 1980 and from 1981 to 1992. From 2001 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, a Master of Science degree in Religious Education, and a Master of Science degree in Librarianship all from Marywood College.

Surviving is a sister, Rosalie Beatty of Tire Hill, Pa; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, James, and Martin Joseph, and a sister, Catherine.

The funeral will be Friday, April 1 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister M. Columba Enright, IHM

Sister M. Columba Enright, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on February 14, 2005, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA. Born on May 8, 1914 in Ballylongford, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen Mahoney Enright. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 7, 1940 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1943.

She served as a teacher at St. John Elementary School in Cresson from 1940 to 1949; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte from 1949 to 1956; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo from 1956 to 1957; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton from 1970 to 1971; and at Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre from 1971 to 1975. She also served in schools in La Plata and Baltimore, MD; Brooklyn and Oneida, NY; and Cranston, RI. From 1978 until the time of her death she served as prayer minister at the Marian Convent. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Marywood College.

Surviving is a sister, Margaret Mahoney of Ballylongford West, Ireland; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and John; and three sisters, Helen Enright, Mary Kissock and Hannah Fitzgerald.

The funeral will be Thursday, February 17 at 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister M. Bernardine Rinkavage, IHM

Sister M. Bernardine Rinkavage, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on February 8, 2005, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.Born on March 7, 1914 in Susquehanna, PA, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Agnes Bocianski Rinkavage. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1932 and made her temporary profession of vows on April 30, 1935 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1938.

She served as a teacher at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore from 1935 to 1940; St. Leo High School in Ashley from 1952 to 1956; Seton Catholic High School in Pittston from 1956 to 1966; South Catholic High School in Scranton from 1966 to 1967; and at Bishop Hannan High School in Scranton from 1980 to 1993. She also served in schools in Pittsburgh, PA; La Plata, Md; Providence, RI; and Manhasset and Uniondale, NY. Sister M. Bernardine served as a prayer minister while residing at Cathedral Convent in Scranton from 1993 to 2001. From 2001 until the time of her death she served as prayer minister at the Marian Convent. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Latin from Marywood College and a Master of Arts Degree in Education from Villanova University.Surviving are a brother, Neil of Sebastian, FL; a sister, Frances Hoban of Apache Junction, AZ; nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Teresa Desnoyers and Genevieve Jaxheimer.

The funeral will be Saturday, February 12 at 9:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister M. Terentia McNulty, IHM

Sister M. Terentia McNulty, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on February 6, 2005, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.Born on February 28, 1908 in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Agnes Walsh McNulty. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 15, 1925 and made her temporary profession of vows on December 28, 1927 and her final profession of vows on July 31, 1931.

She served as a teacher at St. Rose High School in Carbondale from 1928 to 1932; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant from 1932 to 1936; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport from 1938 to 1941; South Scranton Central Catholic High School from 1951 to 1955 and from 1966 to 1973; Central Catholic High School in Kingston from 1955 to 1960; St. Paul High School in Scranton from 1960 to 1961; and Sacred Heart High School in Carbondale from 1973 to 1984. She also served in schools in Baltimore, Md; New York, Nyack, and Oyster Bay, NY; and as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 1985 until the time of her death. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Latin from Marywood College and a Master of Arts Degree in English from Fordham University.

Surviving are a nephew, William Bowles of Weems, VA; grandnieces and grandnephews including Kathy Bowles of Burke, VA, Sharon Bowles Weichart of Ellicott, Md, and Kevin Bowles of Huntington, Md. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Jerome and two sisters, Clare Carroll and Sister Coronata McNulty, IHM.

The funeral will be Wednesday, February 9 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 



Sister M. Jamesita Lowry, IHM

Sister M. Jamesita Lowry of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on January 16, 2005, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, PA.

Born on February 15, 1919 in Minooka, PA, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Laura Eagan Lowry. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1942 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1945 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1948.

She served as a teacher at St. Mary of Mount Carmel School, Dunmore, PA from 1945 to 1948 and at St. Rose High School, Carbondale, PA from 1954 to 1966. She also served at Marywood College as Coordinator of Certification and Certification Testing from 1971 to 1991 and as Assistant Director of Financial Aid from 1991 to 1994 and continued as an office assistant in the Financial Aid Office from 1994 to 1999. . She also served as a teacher at schools in Pittsburgh, PA, and Oyster Bay and New York, NY. She served as a receptionist at the IHM Center, Scranton, PA from 1999 to 2001 and as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent from 2001 until the time of her death.

She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Marywood College and a Master of Arts Degree in Business Education from New York University.

Surviving are a sister in-law, Annette Lowery, Clarks Summit, PA and a nephew, several nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Rev. Msgr. James Lowry and an infant sister, Ann.

The funeral will be Wednesday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.

 


Sister M. Rose Anne McConway, IHM

Sister M. Rose Anne McConway, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, formerly known as Sister M. Christabel, died on January 5, 2005, at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

Born on July 20,1932 in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Ellen Connolly McConway. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8,1950 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1953 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1956.

Sr. Rose Anne served as a teacher at Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Scranton from 1967 to 1971; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton from 1981 to 1984; and at Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clarks Green from 1988 to 1997. She also served in schools in Danville, PA; Brooklyn, New York, Oyster Bay and Syracuse, NY; and Goldsboro and Rocky Mount, NC. Sr. Rose Anne served as a staff member at the Marian Convent from 1997 to 2002 and a prayer minister there from 2002 until the time of her death.

She received a bachelor of science degree and a master of science degree, both in education, from Marywood College.

Surviving are a sister, Irene Deane of Bronx, NY; and three brothers, Gerard of Bronx, NY, Edward of Manhattan, NY, and Daniel of Margaretville, NY; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral was Saturday, January 8 with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by internment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
