Sister M. Carol Baden, IHM

Sister M. Carol Baden, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She was born on April 22, 1920, in Piscataway, MD and given the name Ruth Catherine. She was the daughter of the late Frank H. and Annie Cecilia Carroll Baden. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1935, and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1939, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1940.

Sister Carol served as a principal at St. Monica Elementary School in Raleigh, NC, from 1954 to 1960; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1960 to 1962; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1963 to 1969; and St. Mary's Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1969 to 1970.

Sister also served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John’s Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1939 to 1941; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School in Rocky Mount, NC, from 1941 to 1954; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1970 to 1973; St. Mary’s Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD, from 1975 to 1977; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA, from 1977 to 1986; St. Rita Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1986 to 1988; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD, from 1988 to 1996.

She also served as the Director of Regina Hall at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1962 to 1963 and as a resident companion at the Marian Convent Scranton, PA, from 1996 to 1998.

From 1998 until the time of her death, Sister Carol served as a prayer minister at St. Mary’s Convent in Dunmore, the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She received a bachelor of science degree in education and a master of science degree in education from Marywood College, Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Carroll, George J., and Francis C.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Baden of Clinton, MD; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Residence, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Wednesday, November 2, between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will follow Mass on Thursday at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Sister Elizabeth Sciulli, IHM

Sister Elizabeth (formerly known as M. Demetria) Sciulli, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, October 7, 2011, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She was born on February 20, 1929, in Pittsburgh, PA. She was the daughter of the late Louis and Bertha Lanzalatti Sciulli. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 1, 1948, and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1950, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1953.

Sister Elizabeth served as a teacher at the following schools: All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA, from 1950 to 1956; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1956 to 1957; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1957 to 1959; St. Bernardine Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1959 to 1960; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1960 to 1963; St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1963 to 1966; St. Lawrence Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1966 to 1968; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA, from 1968 to1968; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1969 to1971; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1971 to 1974; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Clinton, MD, from 1980 to 1981; and St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC, from 1998 to 2000.

She was also the director of the Bright Futures Program at Education Enrichment Institute in Wilmington, DE, from 1995 to 1998.

Sister served as a pastoral minister at the following parishes: St. John the Baptist Parish in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1974 to 1978; St. Bede Parish in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1978 to 1980; and St. Mary Parish in Alexandria, VA, from 1981 to 1982.

Sister Elizabeth also served as a receptionist/support staff member at the Ursuline Center in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1982 to 1985; the Blind Association in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1985 to 1989; the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1992 to 1993 and 2000 to 2002; and at the St. Paul Education Center in New Bern, NC, from 1993 to 1995.

From 2003 until the time of her death, Sister Elizabeth served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Science in degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas.

She is survived by a sister, Mary F. Sciulli of Pittsburgh, PA.

The funeral will be Thursday, October 13, at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Residence, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Wednesday, October 12, between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will follow Mass on Thursday at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Sister M. Benedicta Berendes, IHM

Sister M. Benedicta Berendes, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, October 2, 2011, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She was born on November 28, 1927, in Woodside, NY and given the name Eileen Ann. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Fraser Berendes. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1945, and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1948, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1951.

Sister Benedicta served as a teacher and music instructor at the following schools: St. Bernardine Elementary School, Baltimore, MD, from 1948-1950; St. Patrick’s Elementary/High School, Scranton, PA, from 1950-1952; Sacred Heart Elementary School, Mt. Holly, NJ, from 1952-1957; St. Leo Elementary/High School, Ashley, PA, from 1957-1958; Holy Rosary Elementary/High School, Scranton, PA, from 1958-1965; Little Flower Elementary School, Bethesda, MD, from 1965-1967; St. Rosalia Elementary/High School, Pittsburgh, PA, from 1967-1970; Marywood College/University, Scranton, PA, from 1973-2002 and 2004 to present; and St. Rosalia Convent, Pittsburgh, PA, from 2002-2004. Since 2004, Sister Benedicta was a faculty member in the Religious Studies Department of Marywood University.

A presidential scholarship was named in her honor for her many years of service at Marywood.

She received a bachelor of music degree and a master of science degree in religious education from Marywood College, a master of music degree from the University of Notre Dame, and a doctoral degree in musicology from the University of Pittsburgh. In further education, she received a choir master certificate in the American Guild of Organists.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Berendes and a foster brother, Thomas J. Cassidy.

She is survived by a sister, Sr. Ann, IHM, Center Moriches, NY, and cousins, nieces and a nephew.

The funeral will be Thursday, October 6, at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Wednesday, October 5, between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will follow Mass on Thursday at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Sister M. Coleman Nee, IHM

Sister M. Coleman Nee, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She was born on November 14, 1917, in Taylor, PA and given the name Nora. She was the daughter of the late Coleman and Nora Hopkins Nee. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1941 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1944 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1947.

She earned her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees at Marywood College. Further studies at the doctoral level followed at the University of Notre Dame, Marquette University and the University of Arkansas. She was awarded the Distinguished Pennsylvanian Award in 1980 and an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from the University of Scranton in 1983.

Sister Coleman served as the 9th president of Marywood College (now Marywood University) from 1970 to 1988. Early in her presidency the Motherhouse, which housed the college for its first decade, was destroyed by a tragic fire on February 22, 1971—the site later commemorated by the Marywood Memorial Commons in 1975. Known as a firm decision-maker and visionary leader, her administration was marked by significant development in academic programming, plant expansion and financial stability. More than 11,000 diplomas from Marywood College bear her name. Sister Coleman continued her decisive leadership of Marywood in the 1980s, culminating eighteen years of unprecedented service as president. Upon her retirement, she was named honorary member of the Board of Trustees of Marywood College.

She had been a member of several boards of directors including the Foundation for Independent Colleges; National Education Association; Scranton Primary Health Care; and Northeastern Child Care Services. She was chairperson of the Planning Council of Department of Education of Pennsylvania, Region III. She also served on the Pennsylvania Governor’s Task Force on Initiatives and was Secretary of the Scranton Chamber of Commerce.

Sister served as a teacher at Marywood Seminary, Scranton, PA, from 1943 to 1955; Marywood College from1959 to 1968; Bishop Hannon High School, Scranton, PA, from 1992 to 2000; and the Education Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center, Scranton, PA, from 2002 to 2004.

She was also the Coordinator of Apostolic Works for the IHM Congregation from 1968 to 1970 and served in Alumni Relations at Marywood College from 1989 to 1992.

From 2004 until the time of her death, Sister Coleman resided at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton where she served as a prayer minister.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Coleman J. and four sisters, Sarah Nee (infant), Beatrice Nee Hannon, Rita Ludgate and Sister M. Augustine Nee, RGS.

She is survived by nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, July 12, at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Monday, July 11, between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will follow Mass on Tuesday at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Sister M. Rosalian Armbruster, IHM

Sister M. Rosalian Armbruster, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She was born on December 8, 1926 in Pittsburgh, PA and given the name Helen Mary. She was the daughter of the late Aloysius Martin and Helen Normile Armbruster. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1944 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1947 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1950.

Sister Rosalian served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC, from 1947 to 1948; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School in Rocky Mount, NC, from 1948 to 1952; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA, from 1952 to 1959; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1959 to 1960; Academy of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Coeur d’Alene, ID, from 1960 to 1967; St. Henry Elementary School in Gresham, OR, from 1967 to 1968; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA, from 1968 to 1973; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1973 to 1980; St. Ann’s Elementary School in Nyack, NY, from 1980 to 1982; St. Clare Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1982 to1983; St. Rita Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1983 to 1988; St. John the Baptist Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1988 to 1992; and at the Education Enrichment Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1992 to 2004.

From 2004 until the time of her death, Sister Rosalian served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Martin John.

She is survived by a brother, Joseph of St. Pete Beach, FL; a sister, Mary Agnes Armbruster of Pittsburgh; a cousin, Agnes McConnell of Gibsonia, PA; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Residence, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Wednesday, March 30, between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will follow Mass on Thursday at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Sister M. Thelma Gutt, IHM


Sister M. Thelma Gutt, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, March 21, 2011 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She was born on February 2, 1915 in Renovo, PA and given the name Mary Julia. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Sophie Kisko Gutt. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1933 and made her temporary profession of vows on April 30, 1936 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1939.

Sister Thelma served as a teacher for nearly fifty years. She taught at the following schools: All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA, from 1936 to 1942; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1942 to 1957; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1957 to 1959; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA, from 1959 to 1961; St. Paul Elementary School in New Bern, NC, from 1964 to 1966; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT, from 1970 to 1972; Pocono Central Catholic High School in Cresco, PA, from 1972 to 1975; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1975 to 1979; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1979 to 1983; Sacred Heart Elementary School in Mt. Holly, NJ, from 1984 to 1989; and at the Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1990 to 1992.

Sister was principal at St. Paul Elementary School in New Bern, NC, from 1964 to1966; and at St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, from 1966 to 1970.

She also served as catechist at Resurrection Catholic School in Muncy, PA, from 1961 to 1964; as accounting assistant at St. Joseph Hospital in Carbondale, PA, from 1983 to 1984; on the staff at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1989 to 1990; and as director of religious education at St. Agnes Parish in Forest City, PA, from 1992 to 1994.

From 1994 until the time of her death, Sister Thelma was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael Francis and Robert, and three sisters, Irene Johnstonbaugh, Catherine Sacarnoski and Margaret Menavich.

She is survived by two sisters, Anna D. Tome of York, PA, and Pauline Hensel of Lock Haven, PA, a sister-in-law, Bernadette Gutt of York, PA, and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, March 25, at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Residence, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Thursday, March 24, between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will follow Mass on Friday at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Sister Mary Peter Doran, IHM

Sister Mary Peter Doran, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She was born on September 2, 1919 in Philadelphia, Pa, and given the name Alice. She was the daughter of the late Edmund and Alice Whalen Doran. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1938 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1940 and her final profession of vows on August 3, 1943.

Sister Mary Peter served as a teacher for nearly fifty years. She served in the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Manhasset, N.Y., from 1940 to 1947; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, N.Y., from 1947 to 1953; Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, N.Y., from 1953 to 1957; Cathedral High School in Scranton, Pa., from 1957 to 1962; St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, N.Y., from 1962 to 1968; St. Mary High School in Manhasset, N.Y., from 1968 to 1974; and at Seton Catholic High School in Pittston, Pa., from 1978 to 1988. In 1974 she served as principal at Archbishop Neale High School in La Plata, Md.

From 1974 to 1978, Sister served as sector superior for the IHM Congregation. She also served on the staff at the IHM Spiritual Renewal Center in Verona, N.J., from 1988 to 1994 and at Our Lady of Grace Center in Manhasset, N.Y., from 1994 to 1996.

From 1996 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Peter served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree all in education from Marywood College.

She is survived by a brother, Reverend Edward Doran of Villanova, Pa., and cousins, Walter and Mary Tigue of Avoca, Pa.

The funeral will be Friday, February 4, at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Residence, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Thursday, February 3, between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will follow Mass on Friday at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa.
