IHM
Service Trip 2006
The fifth annual IHM High School Service Project took place
in Wilmington, DE with the Ministry of Caring during the week
of July 9-15, 2006. Participants were housed at Saint Matthew’s
Convent in Wilmington, DE with IHM and Franciscan sisters.
The Ministry of Caring is a non-profit, ecumenical organization
devoted to serving the poor, homeless and disadvantaged people
in and around the Wilmington area. The organization
offers food, shelter, job training and placement, childcare, basic
medical and dental care, a residence for people living with AIDS,
clothing and household goods for those in need.
Service Trip participants provided both direct assistance to their
various programs such as child care, senior citizen activities,
and clothing distribution. They also assisted with cleaning apartments
at various transitional housing sites as well as created an “extreme
makeover” at different ministry sites.
The participants were eight IHM sisters, two young women and
fourteen high school students from Massachusetts, New York, various
parts of Pennsylvania and North Carolina
They joined together to “make a difference” by joining
the IHM Sisters to spread “God’s Unconditional Love”
to the poor, homeless and disadvantaged people in the Wilmington
area.
The IHM High School Service Trip was created to provide young
women with a first-hand opportunity to experience the IHM Charism
of “unconditional love” in a variety of ways: community,
prayer, service, play and other daily household duties.
