FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IHM Postulants, 1959

IHM Candidates, Rachel Terry and Carrie Flood, 2005

Why are there fewer sisters today than in the past?

While no one could say with certainty why fewer women today are choosing religious life, the following are some factors that may be contributing to the change:

-

The increase in ministry opportunities within the church for women who are not vowed religious

-

The dramatic changes within society such as increased consumerism and decreased family size

-

Fewer people inviting young women to consider religious life

-

Fear of making lifelong commitments.
