Saturday
of the Second Week of Advent
December 13, 2003
Scripture:
Sirach 48:1-4, 9-11; Matthew 17:10-13
Reflection:
In this
reading from Sirach the scriptural writer foreshadows in the
deeds and wonders of the prophet Elijah the prophetic call of
John the Baptist and Jesus. What is unique about this description
is the noticing of what is the essential job of the prophet:
to speak to the longing of the human heart for unity - unity
among families, unity among nations, unity within ourselves
- the unity of restored relationships.
The prophetic
challenge requires us to work towards this fundamental justice
and unity by attending to our hearts and living out of our deepest
selves - to become
- the self who sees and feels the suffering of others at its
own and then acts in ways to relieve the many faces of pain.
- the self who judges action primarily on the basis of its ability
to increase or decrease compassion and love on this earth.
-the self who knows itself to be part of a larger self - like
waves in the ocean - joined with all human beings and creation
as part of a larger divvine existence.
- the self who lives the larger life where no one is alien.
- the self who finds energy and peace in the heart of God.
Suggested
Action:
Take a few minutes today to reflect on this question: "What
concept of myself do I actually live out of everyday?"
