Tuesday
of the Third Week of Advent
December 16, 2003
Scripture:
Zephaniah 3:1-2, 9-13; Matthew 21:28-32
Reflection:
In the
parable of the two sons, Jesus is speaking to the self-righteous
of his time, individuals who felt secure in their life-style
and saw no need for change. They were blind to the speck in
their own eye and had closed their ears to the message of John
the Baptist, "Repent, and change your ways."
Jesus admonished
them for refusing to acknowledge the truth and believe. Because
of their closed mindedness, they were unable to recognize the
most extraordinary person the world has ever known, the Messiah.
As a result of that denial, their spiritual growth and development
was delayed, while those who accepted and believed in the truth
were assured of the kingdom.
Occasionally,
such moments occur in our own lives, times when we fail to recognize
Christ - in the poor, the outcast and the downtrodden, and sometimes
we fail to see his face in a terminal illness, an unresolved
misunderstanding, an unexpected change in ministry or a temptation
to go astray. Whatever the situation, the question remains the
same, will we utter "Yes," or "No," to the
will of the Father? Will we deny God's presence in life situations
or will we, like the first son, after much thought and prayer,
recognize God in the events and signs of the times and say,
"yes?"
Suggested
Action:
Today, we might reflect briefly on the times in our lives that
we have said, "Yes," and the times we have said, "No."
Then, ask our gracious God to forgive us for the times we have
said "no" and provide us with the grace to remain
faithful!
