| Solemnity
of Mary, Mother of God
January 1, 2004
Scripture:
Numbers
6:22-27; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 2:16-21
Reflection:
As wonderful as that blessing was in the first
reading today, the other readings contain a benediction surpassing
the first. The joy experienced from God letting his face shine
upon his people, looking upon them kindly and giving them peace
is important. Daily observation of sunrises, sunsets, the moon
and stars and the experiencing of the smiles and laughter of
family and friends brings that first blessing.
God's next
design is revealed when Paul speaks of deliverance from the
law, freedom, and sending forth into our hearts the spirit of
God's Son, giving all the inheritance of being his children.
That ultimate blessing is God's special presence as described
by Paul and then in the Gospel, "God sent his Son to be
born of a woman." She treasured all the events of that
birth, reflected on them in her heart, and today revealed his
name, Jesus, who is also Emmanuel, the supreme blessing, "God
with us."
The shepherds
celebrated their new life by glorifying and praising God for
all they had seen, heard and been told. In this new year entrust
every action to Christ's overwhelming and caring love and appreciate
these words, "Through him, with him and in him."
Suggested
Action:
Sing the chorus of What Child Is This?:
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing.
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.
