After the Epiphany of
Our Lord
January 10, 2004
Scripture:
1 John 5:14-21; John 3:22-30
Reflection:
When some
of John the Baptist's followers were leaving him for Jesus,
his disciples were worried. They did not like to see their master
given a second place. They did not like to see him abandoned
while the crowds flocked after this new teacher. Time after
time, he told them that he was not the Chosen One, but he was
sent to prepare for his coming. He assured them that he was
only the forerunner and herald for the Greater One to come.
How much
easier life would be if more people were willing to give up
first place. It would save a lot of resentment if we would realize
that there are certain roles that are not for us, and that whatever
we do for God with purity of intention is pleasing to God.
John's
task had been to prepare the people for the coming of God's
Son, and when that was done he gladly faded out of the picture.
It was not with envy that he said that Jesus must increase and
he must decrease, but it was with joy. We would do well to remember
that it is not to ourselves that we try to attract people; it
is to Jesus Christ. It is not for ourselves that we seek the
loyalty of people; it is for God.
Suggested
Action:
Today,
step aside and let another have your place of preference.
