| Feast
of the Baptism of the Lord
January 11, 2004
Scripture:
Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7; Acts 10:34-38; Matthew 3:13-17
Reflection:
"I,
the Lord, have called you for the victory of justice…"
Isaiah reminds us today of our mission as followers of Christ.
We are presented daily with opportunities to share our time,
talent and treasure to advance the cause of justice for all
of God's people.
In Acts,
we see that "God shows no partiality. Rather, in every
nation, whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to
him." Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jew, Taoist, Buddhist…
in today's shrinking world we may encounter the needy of many
faiths as they seek refuge in America. Remembering the plight
of the Holy Family as refugees in Egypt, let us welcome and
assist the newcomers in our midst. We may not speak their language,
but the language of the heart transcends all cultures.
Let us
hope that when it is our turn to stand at the gates of the new
land of heaven we will hear the voice of God saying, "This
is my beloved son/daughter with whom I am well pleased."
Suggested
Action:
Ponder today what can be done for local refugees. Pray. Extend
the hand of friendship. Contribute money, household goods, clothing,
food. Provide transportation. Explain your cultural celebrations.
Invite them to your home to see your family life. Remember that
all families were once newcomers to this land.
