| Saturday
of the Second Week of Advent
December 11, 2004
Scripture: Sirach 48:1-4, 9-11; Matthew 17:9A, 10-13
Reflection:
Today we become reacquainted with the prophets Elijah and John
the Baptist. What charism we find in Elijah! He arose like a
fire, his word burned like a torch and he was taken up in a
whirlwind in a chariot with fiery horses! He was to restore
unity among God’s people! Next we hear of John the Baptist
who also worked for unity, although it was a unity with a cost.
It is a unity which expects God’s people to form one family
of love.
The challenge to each of us from these prophets suggests an
attitude of reconciliation. During this time of Advent, as we
prepare for the feast of Christmas, it seems fitting that we
examine ourselves and our actions of reconciliation.
- Do I work for unity among God’s people no matter what
the cost?
- Am I filled with the zeal it takes to form a family of love
with those with whom I live or work?
- Am I an instrument of reconciliation when I find myself in
a conflict situation?
- Do I hold on to grudges, hurts or bad memories?
Suggested Action:
Pray the prayer of Carroll Stuhlmueller, C.P.:
Lord Jesus, come quickly! Stir up our longings for peace and
reconciliation. Grant us strength to forgive and forget, so
that we can bring our finest gifts of charity to form a reunion
worthy of your spirit. Amen.
