Scripture: Genesis 17:3-9; John
8:51 59
Reflection:
“Who are you?” - John 8:54
In spiritual writings, the “mountain” is a symbol
of a sacred space for meeting with God. In the first reading,
we are privileged to share a moment of special intimacy with
Abraham, a man of great faith, as he bows in homage before God.
I am El Shaddai (God of the Mountain). Here now is my covenant
with you. I will make you the father of nations. I will be your
God and the God of your descendents. And Abraham listened and
believed.
In the reading from John, the Jews do not believe the words
of Jesus. Who are you, they ask, but their minds are closed
to the answer.
Before Abraham ever was, I AM.
Soon, Jesus will be making his journey up the mountain to make
a New Covenant with us – a covenant not of law but of
love. He truly is “God of the Mountain!”
Do I really want to hear God’s voice, knowing I will be
changed by what I hear?
Suggested Action:
Initiate a serious conversation with a colleague on an important
issue of today, e.g., death penalty, and immigration laws. Take
the unpopular stance based on gospel values.
