Scripture: Isaiah 58:1-9A; Matthew 9:14-15

Reflection:
Both of today’s readings call us to reflect on the traditional notion of fasting, but Isaiah’s words require some real soul searching. It is hoped that we have a more spiritually enlightened view of fasting than his audience did, but that does not mean that there is no room for spiritual growth. Perhaps this year, praying over and reflecting on these passages may provide the opportunity for us to break out of our long held but seldom-evaluated self-denial practices.

How do we view Lenten fasting? Is it an opportunity to shed unwanted pounds, or does it provide us with an excuse for doing nothing else for Lent? If either be the case, consider taking seriously God’s words about fasting from injustice, selfcenteredness and apathy. In place of fasting, we would be better served by finding opportunities to practice the corporal works of mercy. Then, as the prophet promises, the Lord’s favor will heal us, and after all, isn’t spiritual healing what Lenten fasting is all about?

Suggested Action:
Give your closets an early spring cleaning and “fast from” your unused or unneeded clothing. Donate these items to a homeless shelter or a Catholic Charities thrift shop.
