Friday
of the Second Week of Lent
March 12, 2004
Scripture:
Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13A, 17B-28; Matthew
21:33-43, 45-46
Reflection:
Today’s readings relate two incidents in which persons
are treated violently. In the Old Testament reading, Joseph
is sold into slavery by his brothers. In the New Testament parable,
the vineyard owner’s slaves and then his son are murdered
by his tenants. These stories of slaves and vineyard workers
may or may not seem relevant to us. But gleaning the message
of what happens when we are drawn away or drift away from God
is relevant. The understanding of how this affects our lives
and how we act is equally relevant.
During
this Lenten season, we are called to go out into the desert,
to enter into the wilderness of our own hearts and souls. We
have this wonderful opportunity to turn back to God, to deeply
experience God’s unconditional love for us. We are called,
then, not only to reform our lives but also to be transformed
by God’s love.
Suggested Action:
Take time at the beginning of the day to pray before a crucifix.
As you go through the day, hold that image in your mind. Be
aware of how your thoughts, attitudes and relationships are
transformed.
