Solemnity
of Joseph, Husband of the Virgin Mary
March 19, 2004
Scripture:
2 Samuel 7:4-5A, 12-14A, 16; Romans 4:13, 16-
18, 22; Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24A
Reflection:
Joseph is held up to us this day as a man of faith who represents
Paul’s words: “It was not through the law that the
promise was made to Abraham and his descendants that he would
inherit the world, but through the righteousness that comes
from faith.” We often note that in this spirit of faith
Joseph led a hidden life, a quiet and faithful life, and yet
he is Patron of the Universal Church and even, as his litany
calls him, Terror of Demons. From what comes his power in intercession?
It comes from God because Joseph put all his faith in God, even
when faced with the seeming calamity of Mary’s pregnancy.
Some saints are called to perform mighty deeds, but the virtually
unknown fidelity and perseverance of Joseph brings with it a
power no evil can vanquish.
Let us therefore “Go to Joseph,” bringing him our
needs. And let us try to practice a quiet faith like his in
the midst of misunderstanding, confusion, and even violence.
Suggested Action:
Observe a person this day whom you see as a truly humble servant
of God. Choose one quality he or she possesses, and decide how
you could practice it, too
