Scripture: Isaiah
65:17-21; John 4:43-54
Reflection:
We’ve
all heard the cliché, “familiarity breeds contempt.”
I wonder if Jesus was thinking of it when he said, “a
prophet has no honor in his native place.” Jesus was not
terribly successful in his own hometown. What he wanted to do
for his own he was not able to do. His neighbors knew him growing
up and would not open themselves to this “different”
person; but when he went to Galilee they welcomed him warmly
and sought his help. Jesus responded with a miracle of healing.
Jesus performed miracles when the people opened themselves to
him in faith. Miracles were performed so that the people would
know and experience the love of God. These miracles opened a
pathway for the people to let God come into their lives and
to rejoice in his love and care for them.
God said to Isaiah, “I am about to create new heavens
and a new earth; …there shall be rejoicing and happiness
in what I create; …no longer shall the sound of weeping
be heard.” Perhaps God is saying to us, “I want
you to know the miracle of my caring and love. Let me into your
life and see what I can do for you.”
Suggested Action:
Today reach out to someone to whom you might not ordinarily
reach out. If you are aware of someone in need give before being
asked to give.
