Thursday
of the First Week of Lent
March 4, 2004
Scripture:
Esther
C:12, 14-16, 23-25; Matthew 7:7-12
Reflection:
I love this promise from our God, to always give to those who
abide in God whenever they ask. My faith keeps me in prayer,
believing that God alone knows what is good for me.
Praying other Gospel accounts of this promise, we discover that
the evangelists remind us to be strong in faith, close to Christ,
and persistent in our prayer. The readings for today might draw
us even deeper into this mystery, though, if we ponder a bit
on God’s promise to “give to those who ask.”
If faith tells us the Lord always “gives,” and we
don’t receive the favor or blessing we ask for, then “What
did we get”? Were we thrust into dependence on others
for love and support? Were we consoled by our loving and protective
God? Were we at peace knowing that God’s will is a mystery
in which we participate?
For those who “ask” from a place deep in the heart
of the Lord…
For those who “seek” only those things pleasing
to the Lord…
For those who “knock” on the door to a relationship
with Christ…
Only the choicest blessings are bestowed.
Suggested Action:
Take some time with the readings
today to feel the deep faith of those who ask of the Lord. From
thedepths of your own faith, answer the question, “What
did I get”? Discover how your faith transforms both blessings
and disappointments into an everdeepening relationship with
Christ.
