Scripture: Acts 15:1-6; John 15:1-8
Reflection:
Each spring we see many signs of new life and new growth around
us. Themes of gardening – planting, pruning, flowering
– abound. Whether or not we consider ourselves to be someone
who possesses a “green thumb,” we can appreciate
the metaphor which Jesus uses in today’s Gospel message.
Jesus makes it simple enough by telling us that we are the branches
on the Vine of his life and his word. All that needs to be determined
is what kind of branch each of us is. As John’s account
points out, a branch can be fruit-bearing only if it is part
of the vine. Cut off from the vine, a branch withers, dies,
and is used for firewood.
The secret, then, is to live our daily lives in such a way that
we remain connected to this life-giving “vine.”
Hope-filled and renewed by the power of the Resurrection, we
continue on our journey as His disciples, bearing fruit in plenty,
and giving glory to God our Father.
Suggested Action:
Today, if at all possible, allow yourself to have a physical
experience of “vine and branches.” Touch the branches
of a tree in the backyard, prune an overgrown plant, or simply
pick strawberries. Pray in gratitude for the ways in which you
bear fruit for others.
