Fourth
Sunday of Easter
May 2, 2004
Scripture:
Acts 13:14, 43-52; Revelation 7:9,14B-17; John 10:27-30
Reflection:
Paul and Barnabas carry out their mission of preaching the good
news in the face of deep resistance, bordering on violence.
Filled with the spirit of the resurrected Lord, they are resolute
and absolutely committed to their passion – to be what
God has called them to be, a light to the Gentiles and an instrument
of salvation.
Doing mission may occasionally require them to shake the dust
from their feet, but no oppression takes the joy from their
hearts, or the Spirit from their souls. They share a kind of
divine certainty that God’s message of hope and consolation
cannot ultimately be resisted.
Our faith often thrives on just such persistent models. If we
are fortunate, we are surrounded by those who know how to reach
out to the difficult, how to soothe a suffering child, how to
overcome deep grieving and how to live family life with grace
and peace. We meet people who bless our communities with a commitment
to justice, shepherd those outcasts among us as if they were
their own kin, and consistently extend God’s help and
protection to those in need. They hear and respond to the same
voice that urged Paul and Barnabas to mission, and their example
enables us to continue in hope that all of our tears will be
ultimately wiped dry.
Suggested Action:
Reflect on the most consoling word or gesture extended to you
in the recent past, and jot a small note of thanks for this
soulful support.
