Monday
of the Seventh Week of Easter
May 24, 2004
Scripture:
Acts 19:1-8; John 16: 29-33
Reflection:
Both readings today invite us to reflect on the gifts we were
given with baptism. In one, Jesus is speaking with his disciples.
Because he is speaking plainly, and not in veiled language,
his disciples express to Jesus their belief in him. And Jesus
answers, “ Do you believe at last?”
Similarly, in the reading from Acts, Paul’s teaching about
John’s baptism of his disciples at Ephesus convinces them
to accept baptism in the Lord Jesus, which initiates in them
the indwelling of the of the Holy Spirit, with the Spirit’s
gifts of prophecy and tongues.
As we reflect on these teachings today, let us try to remember
our own baptism, with all the gifts we received from God - his
Holy Spirit, our faith, the courage to witness to that faith.
Even though, in time we are centuries removed from those early
disciples, the same gifts of the Spirit are in us, in some cases,
waiting to be evidenced and used, in others, visible, even today,
in the healings, conversions, faith witnessing, peace and joy
communicated through us. The Holy Spirit, not limited by time
or place, is still active, manifesting these and other gifts
through us and in us, as we exercise our faith.
Suggested Action:
Pray to the Holy Spirit for an increase of faith in ourselves
and others. Share the faith that is in you. Encourage others
to do the same. Start or join a faith-sharing group. Thank God
for all these gifts. Pray: I believe, Lord. Help my unbelief.
