Monday
of the Fourth Week of Easter
(Feast of Philip and James, Apostles)
May 3, 2004
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:1-8;
John 14:6-14
Reflection:
Paul and John in today’s readings provide us with direction
for our faith journey. Paul tells us that it is the gospel by
which we are saved if we hold firm. John recounts Jesus’
words to Thomas and to us that if you really knew me, you would
know the Father.
Such
a small word “if” is, and yet so much depends on
it. If we, relying on God’s help, stand firm in the many
instances when gospel values are challenged; and, if we, trusting
in God’s help, open our hearts and minds to see him in
the scriptures, the Eucharist, other persons, the present moment
- how much more joyfully we will travel on the path to God.
We are told that we will know and see the Father. How often
are we sad and discouraged as we look at our sad world? What
joy and hope would be ours if we could stand firm and see with
the eyes of Jesus.
Suggested Action:
Notice the times today that you see or hear the word “if.”
Recall the words of Jesus and trust that he will strengthen
you in all you do.
