Fourth
Sunday of Easter
April 17, 2005
Scripture: Acts 2:1-14A, 36-41; 1 Peter 2:20B-25;
John 10:1-10
Reflection:
“Nothing greater can happen to a human being than he (or
she) is forgiven.”
Paul Tillich, one of the twentieth century’s most influential
theologians, wrote the above words, and today’s first two
readings provide evidence of their veracity. Jesus’ unconditional
love and forgiveness have completely transformed Peter from the
frightened, three-time denier of Jesus to the emboldened leader
of the Apostles. He is able to testify with authority and from
deep personal experience about Jesus’ true nature as Messiah,
Shepherd and Keeper of souls.
Jesus is the Gate through which we run into God’s infinite
embrace of love. His passion, death and resurrection have for
all time reconciled us to God if only we turn to Him and humbly
accept this gift of reconciliation. Our mind may not be able to
grasp the magnitude of such a gift, but when we allow our heart
to marvel at its wondrous extravagance, we cannot help but be
transformed, as Peter was, and become witnesses of that love and
forgiveness to our fellow human beings.
Suggested Action:
Reflect with awe on God’s forgiveness of all people through
Christ. Ask God for the grace to forgive those who have hurt you
and, if possible, tell them that you forgive them.
