Fifth
Sunday of Easter
April 24, 2005
Scripture: Acts 6:1-7; 1 Peter 2:4-9; John 14:1-12
Reflection:
“Come to him a living stone, rejected by human beings but
chosen and precious in the sight of God.”
Nowhere in history do we encounter anyone nearly so compassionate
or just as Jesus. No one ever reached out with so much love to
the poor, sinful or marginalized as did he. And yet, he found
himself rejected by so many of the “righteous ones”
of his day.
Like Jesus, precious and chosen in God’s sight, many of
our brothers and sisters, in whom Christ lives around the world,
are also ignored and scorned. Governments, nations and individuals
continue to heap abuse upon those with no power, wealth or influence.
Reflecting on such evil, I am often overwhelmed. But I am chosen
so that I may “announce the praises of him who called (me)
out of darkness into his wonderful light.” I can help to
turn around the negative thoughts, talk and actions directed at
people of other cultures, beliefs and life-styles.
Allowing his light to permeate my conversations, my daily prayer
for those in darkness, my personal involvement in justice and
peacemaking activities, will enable me to acknowledge and eradicate
the prejudices deep within myself and others and allow healing
to mend our wounded world.
Suggested Action:
Today I will help to bring healing and reconciliation through
all my conversations with and about others.
