Scripture: Acts 15:1-6; John 15:1-8
Reflection:
We see in this first reading from Acts that controversy existed
in the early Christian church as it exists today in our own churches.
It is important to note how Paul and Barnabas chose to deal with
the dispute: through patient discussion and conversation with
wisdom figures. This passage acknowledges that it may not be possible
to satisfy every group in the community, but with the guidance
of the Spirit we can open ourselves up to receive the truth.
When we face dissention and conflict it is absolutely essential
that we remain connected to Jesus. This is the message of John
15. When we remain in Jesus we begin to see with his eyes and
think with his mind. Praying the scriptures is one key way to
“remain in.” Our task as followers of Jesus is to
form discerning communities of faith that are rooted in the message
of the gospel. That message is one of peace and reconciliation.
We need to bring that message into the dark corners of our world
that are desperately in need of the light.
The early Christians were able to be bearers of light because
they focused on Jesus. Let us do the same.
Suggested Action:
The next time you find yourself in a heated discussion or dispute,
pull away and spend some time “remaining in.” Notice
the changes in yourself. Then give thanks.
