Solemnity
of the Octave of Easter
April 3, 2005
Scripture: Acts 2:42-47: Peter 1:3-9; John 20:19-31
Reflection:
Peace! - that elusive ideal for which each of us longs, too many
fight and die, all pray, and so few work. Peace, admittedly, is
not merely the absence of war, or even conflict - an inevitable
part of our lives as relating human beings. Nor is peace some
kind of static state we contrive to create by locking doors that
might admit anything resembling conflict. Peace is about the dynamic
way of relating to people and events in the ordinary moments of
being human, always mindful of what is best for all, - “being
peace.” It is defined by creativity, passion and courage,
engaged in patiently, perseveringly and with humility.
Peace is pricey. Thoughts of the Via Dolorosa linger, images of
Christ’s wounds- vivid. Few are asked to pay such a price.
But it does have its cost. The down payment is the courage it
takes to confront or initiate reconciliation. Pursuing it taxes
our patience. Persevering in spite of suffering, failure, misunderstanding
and disappointment challenges even the most committed. Recognizing
their limits and admitting that no one person holds a monopoly
on the truth characterize the truly humble. Challenging? Oh yes
- but we know we must do no less than all we can.
Suggested Action:
Begin the process of “being peace” by praying: “Lord,
may I give to others what I have received from you: peace.”
