Friday
After Ash Wednesday
February 11, 2005
Scripture:
Isaiah 58:1-9A; Matthew 9:14-15
Reflection:
Fasting unites the readings for this day. God’s idea of
fasting is being communicated through Isaiah’s words with
the assurance that this kind of fasting will make my voice heard
on high. I am offered positive ways of fasting:
freeing the oppressed,
sharing bread with the hungry,
sheltering the homeless,
clothing the naked and
being there for those who need me.
After the Tsunami devastation experienced by so many, it seems
this type of fasting and giving has become more urgent. It is
a call to daily renewal in finding other ways to free those
oppressed with heavy burdens. Maybe through my words or songs
someone will find peace and comfort.
Every Easter, as I watch the sun rise, I am reminded of the
call to new life through the Resurrection. Isaiah says, “then
your light shall break forth like the dawn.” Furthermore,
God’s loving presence is promised through the words, “Here
I am,” in response to every cry for help. In the Gospel,
Jesus reminds us that His presence is to be experienced with
joy.
Suggested Action:
Sing the chorus of “Here I am, Lord.”
Here I am Lord, is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
