Monday
of the First Week of Lent
February 14, 2005
Scripture: Leviticus 19:1-2,11-18; Matthew 25:31-46
Reflection:
How do we of the twenty-first century listen to the Word of
God? How do we live this word today? The first reading is somehow
the script that is used to enable the Son of Man to separate
the sheep from the goats. There is little doubt as to who provides
the material for the judgment. It is each of us. As we live
each day, we write the script for the judgment day. It seems
especially to be drawn up according to the love with which we
live each minute. It seems to be drawn from the depths of our
beings.
What motivates us to what we do? What got you up and started
you on your journey today? What will keep you in shape today?
What causes you to do good and bring about good wherever you
go? For us it is the mission of Jesus and love of God which
calls us to love everyone. Only the firm stance of a lover enables
us to do so. Dorothy Day tells us: “God’s love should
be infused into every thought, word and deed.” John of
the Cross says: “Love is the measure by which we shall
be judged.” What better way can we bring about reconciliation
in our world?!
Suggested Action:
On this day, the feast of love, the feast of St. Valentine,
be aware of all you do. Bring love to every thought, word and
deed.
