Scripture: Jeremiah
11:18-20; John 7:40-53
Reflection:
Today’s scriptures bring us Jesus, the prophet, a light
of revelation to the people who “know nothing of the law”
and a stumbling block to the Sanhedrin and the Pharisees, the
custodians of the law.
I’m reminded, once again, that change, be it social, political,
economic or religious, never comes from those enthralled with
their own power. The stakes for them are too high. Our change
agents, prophets, are those who, living the law of love, hear
the voice of the people and speak to their hearts.
I believe we all are called to be prophets. While some of us are
called to cry out in the name of justice, all are called to live
a prophetic life of justice, mercy and love of neighbor. Moreover,
there are times when we all must find our voice. We must listen
to the whisperings of the God within and add our voices to the
chorus of dissent or have the courage to begin to sing that solo,
trusting that, if our cause is of God, others will follow.
The scripture reminds us today that our prophets may not come
from the expected source; they may indeed come from Galilee, or
Scranton, or Harlem or your neighborhood. That prophet may be
you.
Suggested Action:
Find your voice today. Speak your truth, in some way, large or
small, to address an injustice, which saddens your soul.
