Friday
of the Fifth Week of Lent
March 18, 2005
Scripture: Jeremiah 20:10-13; John 10:31-42
Reflection:
As Jesus approaches his hour, our awareness of antipathy toward
him is heightened. “Terror on every side!” The battle
of Good vs. evil is coming to a peak.
Again, rocks are readied for throwing.
Again, Jesus tries to bring his enemies to faith.
Again, they try to arrest him.
Again, Jesus escapes.
But crucifixion is in the offing.
The battle continues today in individual hearts and in society.
The Body of Christ suffers violence.
The Body of Christ preaches a doctrine of love.
Crucifixion awaits in the struggle for reconciliation.
How willing are you to die to yourself for the sake of
reconciliation?
How much persistence have you in the struggle?
How much faith and trust that God will prevail?
Suggested Action:
As you listen to the news today or read the newspaper, notice
the movements of your own heart. Are you ready to say with Jeremiah,
“Let me witness the vengeance you take on them.”?
Or, like Jesus, can you say, “Father, forgive them for they
know not what they do.”
