Solemnity
of Easter Monday
March 28, 2005
Scripture: Acts 2:14, 22-33; Matthew 28:8-15
Reflection:
The events of the past weekend have been powerful. The disciples
are devastated. They witnessed the crucifixion of the One in whom
they had placed all their faith and hope.
In the first reading Luke reflects first on the events of Pentecost
and reminds us that the words and actions of Jesus are a sign
of the outpouring of the Spirit received from the Father.
The second reading is an account of Easter morning: the women
first go to the tomb and find it empty. On their way to tell the
disciples they meet Jesus who says, “Do not be afraid; go
and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; they will see me there.”
Each of the evangelists recounts how Jesus manifests himself first
to women. This cannot be unintentional. The women might have shown
some fear, but they believed and did as they were told. The men
had to see to believe. Why does scripture seem concerned about
the presence and mission of women? Let this make us aware that
we must be open to the working of the Spirit as the Spirit continues
to guide us and the Church.
Suggested Action:
Pray for an increase of faith especially as you pray with Scripture.
As the Spirit unfolds the truths contained in sacred words, do
not be afraid to follow where the Spirit leads you.
