of the Third Week of Lent

Scripture: Hosea 6:1-6; Luke 18:9-14
Reflection:
The readings today speak to us of the desire of our God to be
close to us in His love. The first reading from the prophet Hosea
tells us how God Himself formed the Chosen people by chastising
them and teaching them, yet holding them ever close. For God desires
only the closeness of a love relationship, not sacrifices, righteousness,
money or deeds.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells the parable of two people in
prayer. The Pharisee, one of haughty stature, looks down on the
tax collector, a humble, contrite person. Both come before God
with offerings. The one of high stature brings a list of righteous
behaviors and gives thanks to God that he is so much better than
others. The humble man brings himself in love as a gift to God.
He offers contrition, and pleads in hope for the tender care and
mercy of God. Jesus reminds us of the irony that one’s blessings
could be the very cause of one’s separation from God and
others!
Suggested Action:
Be sure to look left and right and all around to the community
God has placed us in. Looking down on other people, cultures,
or organizations can divide us. We are called to walk humbly with
others on our journey toward a greater closeness with God.
