Fourth
Sunday of Lent
March 6, 2005
Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:1B, 6-7, 10-13A; Ephesians
5:8-14; John 9:1-41
Reflection:
“All I know is this, once I was blind and now I see.”
In John 9:1-41, Jesus restores sight to a blind man. It is a miracle
to him and he comes to believe in Jesus as the Son of Man. The
Pharisees saw it differently; only God performs such healing miracles.
The most important part of the story, however, was not the healing
of the physical blindness but that his inner eyes were opened
to the Light of the World. Jesus is the healing light freeing
us from spiritual blindness and restoring us to wholeness of body
and spirit.
Seeing in the light includes reconciliation, concern for the poor,
the implementation and defense of justice and right and acceptance
of suffering. Let us bring sight to the blind in a culture where
excessive pursuit of pleasure and power can spiritually blind
us to the dignity and rights of others. Let us bring light to
those enmeshed in poverty, addiction, ignorance, discrimination
and violence.
Our Lenten journey toward Easter includes the graces of the Sacrament
of Reconciliation, the healing which bestows forgiveness and peace,
and is a journey on the pathway to love and friendship.
“Walk then as children of light, for the fruit of the light
is in all goodness, justice and truth…(Ephesians 5: 8-11).
Suggested Action:
See through the Light of Christ.
