Tuesday:
Feast of Philip and James
May 3, 2005
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:1-8; John 14:6-14
Reflection:
Sandra Schneiders, in her book, Written That You May Believe,
teaches her readers about the writers of the Johannine Community
and how they chose to write the theology they embraced for all
future readers so that they may believe. The following seems to
be so prevalent for us, today, in the words of the Pauline and
the Johannine Community. We have been hearing these words: trouble,
not knowing the way, hold firmly to the message, and “Lord,
show us the way.” Today, we hear: “I (the Christ)
am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.” “Believe
me.” “The one who believes in me will also do the
works that I do…. even greater works than these….
Whatever you ask in my name will be done.”
In this season of Easter and of hope, in the midst of war, tsunami
disasters, injustice and abuse, we are called to hear the message
today – the words written that you may believe – to
follow the Way, the Truth and the Life. To believe. We are called
to be the presence and witness of Christ in the world and to do
the works of Christ. Let us firmly ask ourselves where we can
be hope and points of light toward reconciliation.
Suggested Action:
Reflect on the following: Where in my life do I need reconciliation?
Reconcile, in a tangible way, with self, with another, with God.
Where do I find myself leaning: trouble, not knowing the way or
right now am I filled with belief? Hold onto the cross and reflect
on your trouble or your belief and ask the Risen Christ to reconcile,
heal and restore your own belief or that of another.
