The congregation
celebrated the completion of the new life-size, bronze statue
of Mother Theresa Maxis at the opening of IHM Days.
The 433-pound statue,
which stands by the baptismal font near the entrance to the
chapel at the IHM Center, was created during a 10-month period
by Sr. Cor Immaculatum Heffernan who described its creation
as a work of prayer that grew out of her meditation on the life
and letters of Theresa Maxis.
Sr. Cor described
Theresa Maxis as a woman of energy and deep passionate love
who had vision and believed in the primacy of the individual
conscience. Her outspoken and spontaneous nature and the strength
of her convictions in the choices she made were among the characteristics
of Theresa that led Sr. Cor to create a life-sized work that
was made of a strong material.
During the prayer
service, Sr. Cor stated, "I hope that this statue will help
each of us recognize the challenges in our own lives and respond
with boundless love, energy, generosity and a willingness to
say 'yes' to the challenges as daughters and sisters of Theresa
Maxis."
In the singing of
the IHM litany, "Friends of God and Lovers of the Dream," the
IHM Days opening prayer also honored the memory of the IHM sisters
who had died in the past year. Included in this litany was Sr.
Katherine Sugrue in whose memory the Theresa Maxis statue was
commissioned by Patricia Leahmy.
